MENDING GARDENS: THE AGED NEW

Off

A COMMUNITY PROJECT LED BY THE BLACK MARI + ABBY BAGBY

Thursday, September 7, 7:00 – 10:00 PM

Community is made up of collaboration and exchanging of ideas, of spending time together not only to share resources but to share joy and stories. In this, we build each other up and remind ourselves that this is how we are meant to exist. We believe in being in physical space together and putting our hands to the work, experiencing life through touch. We believe in breaking down hierarchies and celebrating collective engagement, using art to further those ideals.

mending gardens: the aged new is a collaboration between the Black Mari, Abby Bagby and residents of Dallas. Through organic creation and tactile activity, any who chose to participate added their skills and narrative to two textile-based works, thereby generating a conversation that takes the work far past what either individual artist could’ve created alone.

The artworks engage the longstanding historical arts of weaving and garment-making, disciplines widely known to be communal practices. Keeping true to anticapitalist and collectivist ideals, the participants aren’t required or expected to display “talent” of any kind, instead to use their unique background and abilities to approach each piece in a way that feels natural to them. Every artist is equally credited for their contribution, each voice being as important as the next within the final product.
